How to improve your performance in 60 minutes a day
The best way to help your performance at work, is to stop working....
When did you last take an hour out of your day just for yourself? Not for your business, or your children or your partner but took a whole hour, just for yourself. This is my challenge and it may be the single greatest thing that I can do to help you today, This may be the thing that changes your life and that of your effectiveness at work. There are 1440 minutes in a day, take 60 minutes for yourself. Not just occasionally, but every day. Split your week up and make sure that across the week you do something that supports your wellbeing. There are 4 wellbeing needs that we all have:
1. Physical Wellbeing (rest, exercise, sleep, nutrition) The food we eat, the exercise we take, getting enough sleep and taking time to rest & recover has a huge impact on our body and it is the foundation of our wellbeing.
2. Emotional Wellbeing (understand what makes you feel happy sad, joyful and proud) This can be improved by making sure that you have people at work that understand and get you. Make time to just have a chat, ask to see around their home on a zoom call, or meet their family and pets and be curious to understand them. spend time on, and invest in, your relationships
3. Mental Wellbeing (cognitive ability, good decision making, concentration, memory) Make sure that you take time to rest. Learn mindfulness, meditation, yoga and practice switching off. This in turn will help you to focus and make effective decisions when you are working.
4. Purpose - Why you do what you are doing. Take time to make sure you know why you are working so hard, that you feel inspired and connected to something and that you are inspiring and doing the right thing.
So how do I make time for 60 mins a day, I hear you cry!! First take something that you love for example I love surfing and for most of this year I have lived on a beach in Cornwall. I just pull my wetsuit on, run down to the beach and get straight into the surf. This makes my partner Feilim laugh, as the rest of the time I am wrapped up in at least one jumper while he is still in shorts. When I'm not at the beach I take the dog for a run or walk to start my day. At the weekend I set my alarm and even after a big night out I go to the gym for 8.15am on a Sat and Sunday (or a run during Covid) as I know I will feel better. My daughter, Jaz is different, she hates exercising, she doesn’t want to do it, she avoids it, but to help her she puts out her gym kit at night so that when she wakes up in the morning, the first thing she sees is her kit. It triggers her brain to move and get some exercise. Mel Robbins teaches the 54321 method. Count down backwards from 5 to 1, engage your brain and just do it….
Once you have a routine and can spend 60 mins a day on something that you love, do the same thing with something else that you know will make you more effective. Choose from the hierarchy of the 4 wellbeing needs, like learning to cook, practicing meditation or just read a book. Soon you will be able to take 60 mins out of the 1440 minutes in the day, just for yourself and your wellbeing and from taking that time, you will soon see that your work life starts to improve.
