What we can change from the impact of the coronavirus
What good can come of this chaos?
This has been an interesting week. One of our clients cancelled a workshop as they didn’t want their management team together in one place, in-case they all had to go into quarantine and the business would stop functioning. Another has stopped any form of touching in the office, and has put staff in to serve all food in the canteen, so no one touches the food by mistake and a third has done nothing, no difference! just a few emails with government guidelines and some bacterial hand wash on desks.
Every single death, by any cause, is of course a tragedy for all concerned. One of the worst days so far for Coronavirus was 10th February. On that day 108 persons in China died of Coronavirus. But on the same day
26,283 people died of Cancer
24,641 people died of Heart Disease
4,300 people died of Diabetes
And on that day Suicide, unfortunately took more lives than the virus did by 28 time. Moreover, Mosquitoes kill 2,740 people every day, HUMANS kill 1300 fellow humans every day and snakes kill 137 people every day.
It’s hard to know what will really happen over the next few weeks. I do see all sorts of businesses scare mongering people into making rash decisions and spending lots of money on soap, but what I am surprised at is the lack of leaders using this as an opportunity to make some significant positive change happen. Businesses all exist to serve their customers – this can be a time to reset how a brand serves in extraordinary circumstances. What can they do to truly help their customer and stand out from the crowd and help their people be more effective.
Flexible working is only part of the solution, but it is fraught with challenges, to the extent that many companies have done little to make it a real part of business life. New ways of working that are streamlined, effective and more efficient don’t quite happen because everyone needs to be involved and consensus, rather than common sense often prevails, and few have time to think as they are too busy in meetings to do any real work.
If leaders act quickly now they can prepare to reset their ways of working to empower their people, and refocus on fewer, more effective things. To look properly at customer journeys and business outcomes and use more of the tech that they have already sitting idly in their workplace.
This is a moment for brave leadership
I believe that this is a moment for real leaders to make a difference. To reset by creating a 90 day plan that has a thoughtful approach to how we empower people to engage and work effectively. With adapted ways of working, that puts the well being of their people at the heart of it and thinks about the customer challenge. Don’t let people think that they will have to sit at home feeling overwhelmed, disengaged and not quite sure what they need to do. Make this a time to be more effective and efficient and to try out new ways of working.
No one knows what the next few weeks will hold, but those companies that prepare properly, that take swift and effective action to work in a different and more compelling way may be able to use this a way to reset not retreat.
