Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Prey Love, talks about empathetic overload and empathetic melt down and urges people to replace empathy with compassion, during this challenging time. Compassion is 'I see you are suffering and I want to help you, I am not suffering myself now'. . Empathy is 'you are suffering, so now I am suffering, so now we have two people suffering so no one can serve'. Jaz explains psychologically why this makes a difference and Suki discusses with her how leaders at the moment need to learn some of these skills.

Empathetic overload and empathetic melt down

Replace empathy with compassion

Compassion is I see you are suffering and I want to help you, I am not suffering myself now

Empathy is you are suffering, so now I am suffering, so now we have two people suffering so no one can serve

What underlies compassuon is courage. The ability to witness someone else’s pain and not be drawn into it
