Let's Check - in with David Wheldon, CMO RBS (former)
David Wheldon is one of the top marketers in UK, over a career of 30 years, he has held top marketing roles at companies including RBS, Barclays Bank and Vodafone. Here he talks passionately and openly to Suki about culture, wellbeing and Slow living.
David Wheldon retired at the end of March from RBS after almost five years at the bank and more than 35 years in the marketing industry. None of us could have predicted the enviromnent that he would spend the first days of his new working life in. He was due to be is stepping down as the bank embarks on a “new era” that will it change its name from RBS Banking Group to NatWest Banking Group. The re-brand is the result of years of work by the bank and its exec team, including David, to turn around business performance and brand perceptions following its near-collapse in 2008 and subsequent bailout by the UK government. With that recovery work completed and the bank back to profitability (it made more than £4bn in operating profit before tax in 2019) David was looking forward to some 'me time' and a chance to relax and think about his future career. The coronavirus has instead given him time to reflect. In this very open and revealing interview, David talks to Suki about his own wellbeing, the importance of company culture, brands that are making a difference during this period of time and the benefits of SLOW LIVING.
